Johnny Boys' started as a food truck and catering business, founded by John Dechert and Jamie Rinaldi. John has decades of experience in all aspects of food-service and has worked extensively with students in an alternative learning environment. Jamie is a registered dietitian with a passion for making recipes more nutritious and weight-friendly. Venues served by this food truck include the YMCA and now moving toward high schools (during lunch time and at sporting/special events). The business has grown and now offers an after school program which teaches students about nutrition and how to prepare healthful meals and snacks. At the conclusion of the program, the students collaboratively cook a meal for their families and any school district staff who would like to attend. Johnny Boys' is dedicated to helping reduce chronic health conditions and obesity in youth via proper nutritional education and training in the kitchen. Moreover, the program provides a positive, healthful afternoon opportunity for students who don't wish to participate in sports or other after school activities.
* Classes are approximately 1 hour sessions
* There are 4 8-week sessions a year focused on seasonal cooking.
* Classes require a minimum of 6 students (ages 6 and up).
* A kitchen is not needed, we have the equipment to set up in any classroom or cafeteria.
* All food in the program is dietitian-approved and nutritional data is provided for all recipes.
* Students receive a copy of the lesson plans as well as all recipes to bring home.
NUTRITION - Johnny Boys' arms students with the basic nutritional information necessary to make healthful food choices and create balanced meals and snacks that fill their plates and their bellies. Without getting into the scientific mumbo jumbo, kids will learn what they should be eating and why.
COST - Healthful eating need not be expensive. The program teaches the students how to cook on a budget and prevent food waste.
PREPARATION - This is the fun part! The kids experiment with different recipes and cooking techniques and learn how to incorporate nutritious substitutions without sacrificing flavor. Bonus - altering recipes helps sharpen mathematical and scientific skills.
FOOD SAFETY/SANITATION - There may be a multitude of hazards in the kitchen. Johnny Boys' educates the students on practices to keep food safe and prevent injuries.
CUSTOMER SERVICE - The students practice interacting with others in a way to create a positive experience for everyone and ensure customer retention. No social skills, no tip! ;-)
